The Darjeeling hills have a minimal Private Health Care system and more than 90% of the people are dependent on the public health system.
Historically, Darjeeling has not only been a hill station, but also a destination for Health Care. It is widely known that of all the places in the country, the British selected Darjeeling for convalescence purposes, and built hospitals and sanatoriums here because of the positive impact of the local weather on human health. Now that Darjeeling hills are also a world famous tourist destination, apart from being the land of world famous 'Darjeeling tea' and the repository of Medicinal plants, strengthening of the existing health infrastructure and establishing State-of-the-art Super-Speciality Hospitals, can transform this region into a destination for Medicare and give new dimension to health tourism.
As we strive each day to enhance the health system in the hills ,over the years some new improved facilities have been made available through the joint efforts of GTA along with the Government a few of which are enumerated below.
